гетто Городской район, населенный преимущественно представителями определенной этнической, расовой, религиозной или социальной группы. С конца XIX в. в крупных городах США появились негритянские гетто, в которых постепенно накапливались социальные проблемы, что привело к негритянским бунтам в крупных городах в 60-е гг. XX в. (Нью-Йорк, Чикаго). Беспорядки в Лос-Анджелесе L. A. riots в 90-е гг. показали, что проблема этнических гетто по-прежнему остается острой. Хотя традиционно наиболее известным и крупным негритянским гетто считается Гарлем Harlem, к гетто в социальном смысле можно сегодня отнести лишь часть Гарлема, где проживают преимущественно выходцы из Латинской Америки Hispanics.
